Hemlock Semiconductor Group Welcomes Teachers to Sites
Twenty-nine educators were welcomed to three Dow Corning mid-Michigan
plant sites, HIMS, Hemlock Semiconductor Group, and Auburn, for the Saginaw
Valley Regional Summer Institute program in June. The program is sponsored by
the Saginaw County Business Education Partnership.
Presentations were given about Dow Corning and Hemlock Semiconductor,
the recruiting and hiring process, and skills looked for in potential
employees. The visits concluded with tours of the sites.
Each year the Partnership works with businesses and schools to increase
academic achievement and workforce readiness skills within the region. This
program helps educators learn what they need to do in their classrooms to
prepare students to be successful in the workforce.
After the presentations, visitors to the sites commented that there seemed
to be a lot of job opportunities for students who choose to pursue degrees in a
science- or math-related field. "I learned that many jobs are available for
chemical operators, and these jobs require math and science backgrounds,"
said one visitor at Hemlock Semiconductor. A teacher at HIMS related, "I
will be pushing students toward chemical and engineering jobs."
Visitors also learned what types of skills students need for careers in
science or math. "There is a need for students to learn skills such as
organization, math, honesty, timeliness, working hard, and having a
vision," said a teacher at the Auburn site.
"This event is a great way for our local educators to better understand
Dow Corning, how our products are used in people's everyday lives, and how
our sites make safety a priority," said Kim Houston-Philpot, human
resources compliance officer, HIMS human resources manager, and board member
for the Saginaw County Business Education Partnership. "These types of
outreach efforts keep us 'top of mind' in the community and help brand
Dow Corning as a great place to work in the region."
