Great Lakes Solar Technology Park Dedicated in Thomas Township

More than 50 business and community leaders celebrated the dedication of the new Great Lakes Solar Technology Park November 11, 2011 in Thomas Township. This 231-acre park located one mile away from Hemlock Semiconductor Group’s corporate headquarters was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Saginaw Future Inc., Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Thomas Township, and the County of Saginaw Economic Development Council.

“This Thomas Township farm is Michigan’s first and only Certified Alternative Energy Park, and is now ready to harvest energy for the future,” said Bruce Hill, Chairman of the Saginaw Future Board of Directors.

Great Lakes Solar Technology Park Dedicated in Thomas TownshipThe shovel-ready land has the potential to locate up to six solar manufacturing facilities on the property. Saginaw Future and other regional economic development organizations are working to attract alternative energy companies to build on the site.

“One of the most critical needs of an expanding company is speed-to-market. In today’s globally competitive environment, businesses are under great pressure to be up and operating, quickly, efficiently and without surprises,” said Aaron Howald, Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer of Hemlock Semiconductor Group. “Constructing this Solar Technology Park as well as sites throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region eliminates uncertainty and provides cost-effective alternatives for companies to consider as they grow and expand.”

Analysts predict the United States is the next major solar market. In 2010 alone, $6 billion worth of finished solar energy systems were installed in the U.S., which more than doubled 2009’s installations. Despite the current softening of the market, recently released data shows the U.S. solar energy market grew 69% in the second quarter of 2011 year.

“This is a step in the right direction to build a solid foundation for the solar supply chain right here in the region,” said Howald.
