The Hemlock Semiconductor Group today presented the Austin Peay State University (APSU) in Clarksville, TN with a $2 million contribution to purchase lab equipment for the University’s new Chemical Engineering Technology building.

Rick Doornbos, Hemlock Semiconductor president and CEO presented the gift on July 10 during APSU’s groundbreaking. “The state of Tennessee, Austin Peay State University and Hemlock Semiconductor recognize the importance of having a knowledgeable and skilled workforce to provide for the safe and efficient operation of a chemical facility,” said Doornbos. “This will not only offer students potential job opportunities with Hemlock Semiconductor, but also with other chemical companies around the United States.”

The money will be utilized to design, engineer and purchase the equipment for the “hands-on” lab stations where students will have the opportunity to run several chemical processes.  Some examples include: distillation, pump and tank operations, filtration and instrumentation. The APSU Chemical Engineering program is similar to the curriculum currently being offered at Delta College in Michigan.

APSU received a $6.4 million grant from the state to build the new lab facility on campus, and worked with both the Tennessee Board of Regents and the Tennessee Higher Education Commission to offer an associate degree program in chemical engineering technology.

The new facility and degree program are the result of  Dow Corning and Hemlock Semiconductor’s December 2008 announcement that Clarksville will be the site for its new polysilicon manufacturing facility.

The new Clarksville site is scheduled to be operational in late 2012 and will employ approximately 500 people.
