When it comes to environmental performance, compliance is the minimum. We
go beyond compliance to make a difference
Managing the raw materials we use and the products we make in a safe and
environmentally responsible manner is important. It is also important for our
customers to know that the products they buy from Hemlock Semiconductor Group
are accurately described, properly packaged, and documented to identify any
hazards or potential safe use issues. We have a drive toward zero waste and
emissions.
Here are the ways we are making a difference for the environment and
conserving natural resources:
-
Responsible Care®
– We actively participate in this American Chemistry Council's comprehensive
initiative and fulfill all the required reporting annually. Hemlock
Semiconductor received the RC14001
certificate in 2008 along with the ISO
14001 certificate for environmental management.
-
Energy reduction – An important part of our resource conservation
program is an aggressive energy reduction goal that targets significant
reductions in our average greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This program includes
a plan to reduce natural gas consumption by using heat recovered from the
manufacturing process to generate steam.
-
Hazardous waste reduction – Our goal to reduce hazardous waste
generation rates is a key initiative in our commitment to the communities where
we live and work.
-
Water conservation – We plan to reduce our dependence on city water
by recovering process water (normally discharged) to use as make-up water for
cooling towers.
-
Recycling – If it can be recycled, we do it. We have been successful
in increasing the amount of material recycled by a significant percentage each
of the past three years. Since 2003, we have recycled over 7 million kilograms
of materials.
