Hemlock Semiconductor Becomes First Polysilicon Manufacturer Worldwide to Earn IATF Certification

Achieving Quality Standard Means Better Semiconductors for Automotive Industry

HEMLOCK, Mich. — Hemlock Semiconductor Operations (HSC) today announced it’s the first polysilicon manufacturer worldwide to obtain certification from the International Automotive Task Force (IATF), which sets the quality standards for the global automotive industry.

As one of only five polysilicon manufacturers in the world integral to the semiconductor supply chain, HSC now will be able to better assist semiconductor companies meet automakers’ quality requirements. Motor vehicle manufacturers in the U.S. and elsewhere have struggled to find enough semiconductors to meet the demand for new vehicles.

“This is a certification many of our semiconductor customers have been asking HSC to achieve,” HSC Chief Technology Officer Mark Laboda said. “It will make HSC a more favorable supplier over our competitors due to the rigorous requirements and audit standards needed to accomplish this task.”

HSC began working nearly two years ago to identify gaps in its quality management system and address any shortcomings. The final IATF audit was conducted in December 2021 and HSC recently learned it passed all the audits and had achieved IATF certification.

“We’re proud to earn this distinction after nearly two years of hard work,” said Phil Dembowski, HSC senior vice president and chief commercial officer. “Meeting these exacting standards has helped us move our already high quality standards to a new level of excellence.”

HSC is a leading provider of hyper-pure polycrystalline silicon and other silicon-based products used in the manufacture of semiconductor devices, solar cells and modules. The polysilicon it produces is 99.999999999% pure, and HSC continuously strives to improve the purity of its product while reducing its carbon footprint and making its business operations more sustainable. With 1,350 workers, HSC is one of the largest employers in the Great Lakes Bay Region.
